Forty eight things to do instead of a screen, on cards you cut out and keep in a jar. Sorted by how long they take and what they need.

The six categories

  • Ten minutes or less Paper aeroplane contests, sock basketball, drawing with your wrong hand
  • Half an hour or more Forts, comic strips, inventing a board game, designing a dream bedroom
  • Outside Cloud spotting, bug hunts, stick sculptures, shadow drawing
  • Making things Cardboard box anything, origami, marble runs, painting rocks
  • With somebody else Teaching an adult something, story tennis, secret handshakes
  • Quiet things Reading somewhere unusual, writing the worst poem possible, learning a card trick

How it works

Cut the cards out once, fold them, put them in a jar. From then on the answer to being bored is to pull one out, and the rule is that you have to do whatever it says.

That rule is what makes it work. Being allowed to reject cards turns the jar into another decision, and deciding what to do is the exact thing that felt impossible five minutes ago.

There are blank cards at the back too. The ones children invent themselves get chosen most.
